Vinyl, polycarbonate, polyester, polyethylene, etc. The material used to produce plastic labels depends on their intended future use.
For labels with a thickness of less than 0.5mm, the plastic is used as a film. For labels with a thickness of more than 0.5mm, the plastic is used in sheets.
Plastic labels and surface energy
Generally, plastic labels are designed to be mounted, which is why they have an adhesive surface. The adhesive used depends on the material onto which the plastic label will be mounted, which brings us to surface energy. All materials have a surface energy which determines its capacity to be impregnated and therefore made adhesive.
Advantages of plastic labels
Some advantages of plastic labels are that they are more long-lasting than paper labels and cost less than metal labels. Furthermore, plastic labels are very resistant to harsh atmospheres and aggressive products.
Plastic labels and the environment
Plastic labels can be made with PLA (polylactic acid adhesive). PLA is a new material made with a vegetable oil base. The substrate is 100% biodegradable and has much the same appearance as labels made from vinyl.
The range of printable plastics is now large enough to produce plastic labels designed for any purpose and for use in all types of environment.
